Cure International Hospital, Kijabi, Kenya

We met with Nelson Mookie, Manager of Capital Projects for Care International Hospital.

Nelson was kind enough to give us a tour of the hospital and the large expansion project, which will effectively double the size of the hospital, add solar power, and provide additional housing for visiting staff, patient families, and visitors.

The hospital, established in 1998, currently performs 2,500 corrective surgeries each year for children with injuries or deformities. The 56-bed hospital also has space for families who stay during a child's treatment. This setup is very similar to the CURE hospital we visited in Addis Ababa. The facility was highly professional, and the impact on patients was unmistakable.

The hospital is committed to several initiatives outside the hospital itself last year $725 medical professionals received extensive training at the hospital Improving their skills to be used at clinics and other Regional facilities Additionally the hospital has an outpatient program and a community outreach and traveling clinic program all this focused on providing improved health care in Kenya.

Our primary purpose for this visit was to review and understand the solar project,  This 250KW (that’s big!) project includes hundreds of solar panels and batteries with the primary purpose of reducing utility cost while ensuring the availability of electric power to operate the hospital when the local utility cannot. The contractor completing the work installed a similar system at CURE Hospital in Zambia.

The scope of this project was nothing short of impressive and based on our short visit the work seems well in hand and when completed in 2025 it will have a huge impact on the hospital. (N/P)
