One Life Africa, Nukura, Kenya
Thanks to Mr. Sam Owen, we were introduced to Andrew Ongoka. Andrew is a Kenyan national who is married to a U.S. medical doctor.
They live in Kenya, and among other things, they have started a youth camp in an area north of Nairobi called Nakuru. The organization is 12 years old and serves about 150 students in quarterly camp sessions. The campers come from a variety of backgrounds, including some from the slums of Nairobi, others from more comfortable backgrounds, and even members of the Maasai tribe (the nomadic tribe known for their height and traditional jumping!).
Currently, One Life Africa is in the process of expanding the camp to increase the number of student campers to 1,000 and to provide dormitories for high-risk young people to be part of the mentoring, counseling, biblical education, and support provided by One Life Africa.
In addition to One Life Africa, Andrew and his wife are also actively involved in the National Prayer Breakfast, serving with Sam Owen. Andrew is an exciting example of Africa's future and shares a common theme with the other founders we met during this trip. Educated in the West, his roots remain deep in Africa, and he understands, as only an African can, the culture and challenges that must be faced to ensure a healthy future for the people he is part of.
